Soccer Positions

These soccer positions include a goal keeper and ten out fielders. These ten players have the defensive, attacking or mid field positions to fill up. All the positions in soccer have their designated roles and a special area in which they could move. Each position requires a set of skills and certain techniques.

The goal keeper is considered as the key to any soccer match. His main role is to provide his team with a surety that the opposite team would not score a goal. This he does by defending the goal. He is restricted to a very precise area, from which he should not move unless absolutely necessary. The goal keeper can defend the ball with any part of his body, including hands. They are expected to be very agile and enthusiastic. They should have very sharp reflexes in order to stop the ball from going in to the goal, as it is hit by the striker of the opposite team.

Next in line of the positions are the defenders. Defenders stay behind the midfielders and provide the goalies with a support to stop the ball from reaching the goal line, and prevent the strikers of the opposite team from scoring a goal. They most of the time stick to their half of the field. The defenders include the centre backs, sweepers and the full backs. A new change that has been introduced in the defending soccer positions is that of wing back. The duty of this player is to defend the goal with more emphasis on the attacking the oppositions goal whenever required.

The midfielders are placed in the middle of the field amid the strikers and the defenders. The main role this soccer position has to play in the course of the game is to snatch the ball from the defenders of the opposite team and give it to the strikers of their own. Their positions can vary according to the situation. They can either be called back in to the defensive position or send forward as the attackers. Therefore, their position becomes variable according to the mode of the game.

1. In defensive midfield, players in these soccer positions need to snatch the ball from the opposite team’s attackers.

2. While the attacking midfield players are in charge of generating scoring prospects.

3. Then there are the side midfielders who are placed either left or the right side of the field. They are supposed to work as both full backs and attackers. They are most often the most skillful dribblers.

The strikers made the most well known players of any team. It is because of the nature of the role that is played by them. Their major duty is to either score the goal or make an opportunity for other strikers to do so. These include the centre forwards, the main strikers and the wingers. They play the most important role in creating a fast mode of the game, as the defenders slow it down if they keep the ball with them rather than forwarding it to the players who would attack the opposition’s goal.

The indoor and youth soccer positions are almost same as the outdoor ones. (Goalie, defenders, mid fielders and attackers), but in the indoor soccer the number of players on each side is lesser than that of the outfield play. There are normally six players on each side including the goal keeper. However, this number can vary according to the size of the indoor soccer filed. In the indoor soccer positions each formation has lesser number of players as compare to the eleven players’ team. Each player has an important role to play at his position during a match. The team relies on all the eleven players, as a bad play by any one of them can cause a match defeat.
